The face of massage is changing at a rapid pace. At one point in history, the service of massage was used for elite athletes and in place of a physician's care. Eventually, with the advance of medicine, massage became a service just for the elite and was viewed as a pampering session. Once again, the face of massage is changing. It is no longer a pampering session, and can be utilized as part of a healthcare plan. While massage is not intended to take the place of medical attention, it is an excellent resource for managing stress, stopping chronic pain, both of which are common reasons for missed days at work, and doctor's office visits. Both of which affect your bottom line and the lining of your pocketbook.
Research has proven time and again, that people of all ages from the cradle to the nursing home respond positively to the caring, skillful hands of a massage therapist. Massage is being used to assist cancer patients in the journey through treatment, boost athletic performance, reduce agitation in Alzheimer's patients, relieve stress at disaster sites, and help car accident victims regain a healthy body to name a few.
If you live in the Owensboro, Philpot, Whitesville, Fordsville or Hawesville areas call or contact me to set up an appointment to discuss how massage therapy can help you
Swedish massage is by far the most predominant example of traditional European massage and it is the most commonly used method in the United States. It uses a system of long gliding strokes, kneading, and friction techniques on the more superficial layers of muscles. It usually goes in the direction of blood flow toward the heart providing an emphasis on stimulating the circulation of the blood through the soft tissues of the body. Swedish can be a relatively vigorous form of massage, sometimes with a great deal of joint movement included. Oil is usually used, which facilitates the stroking and kneading of the body, thereby stimulating metabolism and circulation. Its active and passive movements of the joints promote general relaxation, improve circulation and range of motion, and relieve muscle tension. (That constant ache between the shoulder blades, or that unrelenting knot at the base of your skull, or the tightness felt in your overall body at the end of a long work day) Swedish massage is usally given as a complete, full body technique, though sometimes only part of the body is worked on. Massage clients often report being able to cope with the demands of work and home better after recieving swedish massage.
Seated massage can be performed anywhere from the workplace to the privacy of the LMT's room. You will be seated upright on a special massage chair and will remain fully clothed. No oils are used, so there is no need to be concerned about stains on clothing. The therapist will utilize acupressure and Swedish massage to relieve tension in the upper body. This method is great for someone who is slouched at a desk all day and can only afford a bit of time to revive him/herself. Tension headaches, pain in the arm, wrist or, pain between the shoulder blades and in the neck are common complaints from the men and women who recieve corporate massage. For more information on the value of massage in the workplace or to set up an appointment for Corporate Massage call Anne at 993-2745. ** See "Massage in the Media"
Orthopedic massage is a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain, musculosketal dysfunctions and complicated conditions. It utilizes a variety of methods including a thorough assessment of each condition in order to individualize treatment for each individual client. Some of the methods incorporated are: myofacial release, neuromuscular re-education, PNF stretching, and scar tissue mobilization. The work that is done is very specific in its approach and its outcomes. Ortho massage relies on honest communication between client and therapist and is completed on a deep, yet pain free level. Certified practioners in this modality have undergone intense high level training in order to competently address a wide variety of medical conditions that have been diagnosed by a physician. Those who would benefit from this type of massage are victims of work place or car accidents, those who suffer from repetitive stress syndromes such as Thoracic Outlet, Carpal Tunnel, or Chronic low back and knee problems to name a few. Sports massage is a form of massage that is typically used before, during and after athletic events. The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, drain away metabolic waste, relieve swelling, reduce muscle tension, promote muscle flexibility and prevent injury. The techniques often involve a blend of traditional Swedish massage, and orthopedic massage. Sports enthusiasts whether on a high school or college team, professional, or a weekend warrior would benefit from this type of massage.
Small ball therapy is a method that employs the use of various sized balls to achieve a deep tissue muscle release. This system can be used by the therapist on the client or can be taught to the client for use in between massage sessions. By using balls that are made out of the same material as resistance bands, the client can use them to elongate and soften overworked or tight muscles. Joint range of motion, and chronic pain symdromes can be improved significantly using this method as well. In my expereince this system works incredibly well for those experiencing pain in the lower body such as low back, hips, legs and feet. This system is perfect for the person who has touch issues or simply cannot get in to get a massage as often as needed. Very versatile. At some point in their lives, a staggering number of people will be diagnosed with cancer. It is commonly known as a disease of aging, but current trends show that may be changing. Despite age, gender, and social status many are now faced with this life altering disease. Many of the treatment programs leave the patient feeling drained, ill, and out of control of their own body. Oncology massage is often a way to help alleviate the stress of living with cancer either as the patient or as the caregiver thus improving quality of life for both. Oncology massage is not a cure for cancer, it is a complement to the treatments being used. Even if the client is undergoing current treatment, he/she may be touched by a certified oncology therapist. Therapeutic sessions are guided by an informed therapist (in communication with your oncologist) with the intent to support and assist in relaxation of tension gained as a byproduct of dealing with this cruel disease. Call me if you would like information to supply to your doctor for gaining permission to recieve body work.
Mastectomy Massage is for men and women who have or had breast cancer. Addressing issues such as lymphedema, breast reconstruction, reductions, implants, scar tissue, as well as other complications that arise due to chemotherapy and radiation are the main focus. Education on breast health and examinations is also available upon request. Please let me know if you would like for me to speak to you or your group on these very important yet sensitive subjects.
For a small set up fee, I can come to your office and address the needs of employees during their breaks, lunch-hour or immediately after work. This eliminates the need to schedule massages after hours when many schedules are already tight. Issues that are often addressed in corporate massage are headaches, neck and back aches, pain going down the arms, and general fatigue. Research has indicated that 10-15 minutes of relaxation can rejuvenate, and restore an employee’s state of mind, thus improving the quality of his/her work. Improved productivity is a great side effect of a short trip to the massage therapist during the work day. Typically no oils are used, and no disrobing is required, making it a perfect lunch or afternoon break "get away".

Th pictures below are of my office and some of the tools that I use. Currently I have 2 tables-- my newest table is a Comfort Craft table and allows for a variety of postions. The height is adjustable to accomodate those who may otherwise have trouble getting on a traditional table, and is approximately 7 ft long for taller clients. It is also equipped with a midsplit which allows the spine or front line to be more effectively decompressed. In addition, I have a stationary table that is approximately 4 inches wider than the traditional table which allows larger men and women and elderly comfort and security. The body cushion (blue cushions) are used for women with larger breasts or chest issues, and for pregnant women. The breast cutouts allow them to lay on their stomach with more comfort. Small balls and stones, both cold and hot, are used in a variety of situations to assist in release of muscle tension, and as comfort measures.
Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is a technique used by massage therapists, physical therapists, trainers and other body workers to assist clients with their range of motion and flexibility. This technique was developed by kinesiologist Aaron Mattes over the course of several decades. Since most chronic pain is caused by injuries to the fibrous connective tissues - ligaments, joints, tendons, and fascia - the use of AIS is effective when massage and regular stretching are not enough. AIS can relieve chronic pain, improve range of motion and build strength. Even reduced flexibility that is commonly thought of as age-induced can be reduced and reversed with Active Isolated Stretching. For more information on AIS please visit www.stretchingusa.com
